A MAN WITH GOD

Devotional for Thursday, January 27, 2022

Morning Matthew 11:25-30

Noon Psalms 3

Evening 1 Corinthians 1:20-29

Thus began John Bunyan's second most read book after The Bible. The Pilgrim's Progress: "Walking through the wilderness of this world, I stopped at a place where there was a cavern (Bedford Prison); there I lay down to rest. Soon I fell asleep and had a dream. I saw a man covered with rags, standing with his back to his room, carrying a heavy burden on his shoulders and in his hands a book."

Those who knew Bunyan could not understand how a man without letters, without study, without culture could write and preach the way this servant did. But the answer can be found in his close relationship with God.

John Bunyan was a man of prayer, and this illuminated his whole life in such a way that his preaching moved thousands of people to repentance. It was not his work, it was the work of God through a humble man, but dedicated body and soul to the ministry. He’d pray until God answered; in his own words he expressed: "I tell you: continue to pray; if He does not rise to attend you because He is your friend, because of Your insistence He will rise to give you what You need".

Morning Matthew 11:25-30

25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.

27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Noon Psalms 3

1 Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me.

2 Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah.

3 But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.

4 I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah.

5 I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me.

6 I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about.

7 Arise, O LORD; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly.

8 Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.

Evening 1 Corinthians 1:20-29

20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:

23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;

24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:

27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:

29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.
