CALLED TO HOLINESS

Devotional for December 20, 2021

Morning 1 Peter 1:13-23

Noon Psalms 125

Evening Exodus 19:6

It is a characteristic of our Sabbath services to sing a praise referring to holiness. One of them is hymn # 238 "Holiness to Jehovah”. It’s first line states: "Called to holiness, people of God ...". What great truth these simple words contain! Through time, that has been God's calling for his children on earth. Israel was exhorted and called to holiness by God himself, as a sign that should characterize his people: “And you will be my kingdom of priests, and holy people. These are the words that you will speak to the children of Israel” (Exodus 19: 6). "Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel and say to them: “You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy" (Leviticus 19: 2). But not only Israel, but the Lord’s Church today also enjoys the privilege of this special calling; the believer is called to holiness: "Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord" (Hebrews 12:14). Let us honor this precious legacy by living the words of Luke 1:75 " In holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life."

Our call to holiness is an invitation to be embraced by our holy God.

Morning 1 Peter 1:13-23

13 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

14 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance;

15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,

16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”

17 And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear;

18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers,

19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

20 He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you

21 who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

22 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,

23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever.

Noon Psalms 125

1 They that trust in the LORD shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever.

2 As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever.

3 For the rod of the wicked shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous; lest the righteous put forth their hands unto iniquity.

4 Do good, O LORD, unto those that be good, and to them that are upright in their hearts.

5 As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the LORD shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity: but peace shall be upon Israel.

Evening Exodus 19:6

And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.
