EPHEMERAL (Part I)

Saturday November 13, 2021

Morning Psalms 39:4

Noon Psalms 57

Evening Psalms 103:15,16

If an idea exists in which all men (regardless of the time or place where they live) agree on, is that life is short, life is but a moment. Our years are like a mist that quickly disappears. Our existence is like a flower that falls and withers. We are ephemeral (short-lived). However, it is not something we are always aware of. Perhaps that is why the psalmist asked the Lord: "Let me know my end, and what is the measure of my days, so that I may know how fleeting I am" (Psalm 39: 4). The apostle Peter said: “For all flesh is like grass, and all the glory of man like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls (1Peter 1:24). Here the apostle, quoting Isaiah, reminds us that our life is like the grass and the flower: one day it is there, the next it disappears. This is our existence. Therefore, let us put our eyes on what remains forever, on the eternal, on the glorious hope of our Savior, let us not live ignoring our fragility, but by thinking about it we are moved each day to live depending on the Almighty and recognizing that it is He who, by His grace sustains our lives.

The brevity of life only shows us the eternity that awaits us.

Morning Psalms 39:4

Lord, make me to know my end, And what is the measure of my days, That I may know how frail I am.

Noon Psalms 57

1 Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.

2 I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me.

3 He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth his mercy and his truth.

4 My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

5 Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; let thy glory be above all the earth.

6 They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down: they have digged a pit before me, into the midst whereof they are fallen themselves. Selah.

7 My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise.

8 Awake up, my glory; awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early.

9 I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people: I will sing unto thee among the nations.

10 For thy mercy is great unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds.

11 Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: let thy glory be above all the earth.

Evening Psalms 103:15,16

15 As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.

16 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.
