HOW MUCH OF PETER IN YOU?

Devotional for Wednesday, January 26, 2022

Morning Matthew 26:66-72

Noon Psalms 3

Evening Matthew 14:22-33

There have been many occasions where the most intrepid of the disciples have been victimized because of our lack of empathy or, simply put, of our inability to put ourselves in the place of others. Meditating on the Word, we say: “…I will not be like Peter who, after walking on the waters, was attacked by doubts and then sustained by the saving hand of the Master. I am far from the one who, after years enjoying the company of the Lord, swore to Jesus before everyone that he would not leave Him and ended up denying Jesus. However, even though, with all my strength I battle it; my reality is not so far from Peter’s. I catch myself denying the Lord with my actions, and when I meet the gaze of Jesus, I am not afraid. I will continue to wish to not repeat the faults of the apostle, and strive to move forward and be different, but I know very well that I will end up doing it anyways. However, my desire is to put aside my pride and confess my sins and trust that He who searches the heart, will offer his hand to hold me. This is the time to turn to God and be rooted in the grace that He offers, and allow Him to straighten my steps. We know that God will not turn away from the repentant and contrite heart.

Morning Matthew 26:66-72

66 What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.

67 Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands,

68 Saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ, Who is he that smote thee?

69 Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee.

70 But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest.

71 And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth.

72 And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man.

Noon Psalms 3

1 Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me.

2 Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah.

3 But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.

4 I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah.

5 I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me.

6 I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about.

7 Arise, O LORD; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly.

8 Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.

Evening Matthew 14:22-33

22 And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.

25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.

29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.

33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
