JESUS, THE MOST EXCELLENT HIGH PRIEST

October 6, 2021

Morning Hebrews 2:17

Noon Psalm 5

Evening Hebrews 7:11-17

The Bible has described Jesus in many ways. Jesus has been assigned various names to describe his life and ministry. The three most common designations have been: Prophet, Priest, and King. There is no other record of Scripture clearer on this subject than the epistle to the Hebrews. In developing his argument in the book of Hebrews, the writer does not focus on the role of the prophet or the lordship of Jesus, but on the priesthood. Jesus is quite rightly the "great high priest" (Hebrews 4:14). He is a “merciful and faithful” high priest (Hebrews 2:17), capable of “sympathizing with our weaknesses” (Hebrews 4:15); outside the priestly line of Levi, (Hebrews 7: 11-17), which has opened a “new and living way” (Hebrews 10:20) to enter “even within the veil” (Hebrews 6:19). Now through Him we all "draw near to God" (Hebrews 7:19). The writer of Hebrews intends to show that Jesus is superior to all the priests, sacrifices, and covenants that preceded. Christ is the "most excellent" way. How? Because Jesus is the superior priest who offers a superior sacrifice and is the mediator of a superior covenant through his own sacrifice: His life!

Such a High Priest suited us.

Morning Hebrews 2:17

Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

Noon Psalm 5

1 Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation.

2 Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray.

3 My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.

4 For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee.

5 The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.

6 Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing: the LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.

7 But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.

8 Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face.

9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue.

10 Destroy thou them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against thee.

11 But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.

12 For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.

Evening Hebrews 7:11-17

11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?

12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.

13 For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar.

14 For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.

15 And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest,

16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.

17 For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
